At the "Giro Della Montagna" on "The Hill" in the Italian Sector of St.Louis - Chad took another 4th place. This consistent riding has now pushed Chad into 2nd overall in the Gateway Cup 4 day competition.  Mondays final stage in University should be a Nail Biter !! Stay Tuned...

Venue Information:
The Hill is proud to once again host the longest standing bike race in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area – the Giro Della Montagna – the third stop of the 2008 Gateway Cup!

The Hill boasts the finest Italian restaurants anywhere. It is the boyhood home of such baseball legends as Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola. It is a neighborhood that acts as a model for community as generations of families continue to maintain their residence creating a close-knit feel. The neighborhood was settled by Italian immigrants starting in the late 19th Century. The anchor for the community continues to be St. Ambrose Catholic Church, the Start/Finish site for today’s race. The Italian heritage continues to thrive with the Hill’s variety of Italian restaurants, bakeries, taverns, groceries, community organizations, and social clubs. One of these such clubs, the Bocce Club, hosts the traditional pasta dinner for the cyclists Sunday evening after the completion of the last race of the day..  LOCATION WEBSITE WEBSITE

2008-08-30 - DAY 2 : Chad Cagle (Mercy / Tulsa OK) continues with his good form - takes 4th at Day 2 of the Gateway Cup - The Emerson Motors Downtown Criterium. Mat Ankney came home in 19th after a day at the front in support of Chad.

Venue Information:
St. Louis’s hippest new loft development is host to the second leg of the Gateway Cup! Not too long ago, this area offered only a few seedy clubs, the skeleton of a once-famous garment district, a fledgling enterprise called the City Museum, and a brave new entrepreneurial restaurant effort called the Tap Room.  Today sees the Loft District as a vibrant and growing center of stylish urban living.  Old warehouses have been transformed into stunning loft restaurants, bars and boutiques have populated the storefronts of architecturally beautiful buildings. The Loft District is the centerpiece of downtown redevelopment and is the anchor to an expanding urban renaissance.  LOCATION WEBSITE WEBSITE

2008-08-29 - DAY 1 : Chad Cagle (Mercy / Tulsa OK) storms across the line in 6th place at the first day of the Gateway Cup event at Lafayette Square.  The rest of the team did a fine job working the front of the event - Kolt Bates, Bill Marshall, Scott Barnes, David Hogan and Mat Ankney

Venue Information:
Lafayette Square is known as one of the country’s best preserved examples of Victorian “Painted Lady” architecture dating from the 1870’s and 1880’s.  It is also St. Louis’s oldest historic district.  The neighborhood (and tonight’s race course) surrounds the first public park in the city of St. Louis as well as one of the first public parks west of the Mississippi.  The neighborhood took a hit during the Great Depression and after WWII, but thanks to the restoration efforts of a determined group of urban pioneers, Lafayette Square saw a renaissance starting in the early 1970’s.  Today it is one of the crown jewels of St. Louis, with condo and loft developments as well as a business district blossoming with restaurants boutiques and art galleries. (2008-08-17) 2008 US CRIT NATIONALS
Cagle Takes 7th

Just in, Chad Cagle has just taken 7th at US Crit Nationals in Downers Grove IL. It turned out to be an extremely hard fought event with not a single rider giving an inch during the event - everyone wanted to win this coveted title. All through the event, Mercy Cycling Team controlled the whole event... chasing down everything that moved off the front... setting things up for a sprint finish for our sprinter, Chad Cagle. As Phil Liggett would say, "there was a lot of Argie Bargie" in the final few laps - absolutely no one was allowing anyone to take their place without a fight. In the end, Chad did a super job and came across the line in a fantastic 7th place - not bad for the number one criterium in America. Chad said that he could not have done it without the support and sacrifice of his team. Her also thanked all of our sponsors, including Zero Mountain and Snapple, without their support, out team could not perform so well at these national caliber events!!! Thank you sponsors!!!

Great Job Mercy

(2008-08-14) 2008 US CRIT NATIONALS
IN DOWNERS GROVE

This coming weekend sees the running of the 2008 US National Criterium Championships in Downers Grove, IL. Traditionally, Mercy Cycling has always done very well at this event. Chad Cagle has been our most consistent rider finishing in the top 5 for the past number of years. Ex-Mercy rider, Brad Huff (Jelly Belly Pro Cycling), is the only person in the history of the event to win the national title as an Elite Amateur and then turn around and win the Professional Title the following year.

This year we are sending a very strong team. With Chad Cagle taking 4th at the US National Road Race Championships last weekend, he will be our main hope for victory at the event.  Of course, who could rule out Ex-Olympian, Carl Sundquist ? Carl is rapidly returning to great form. He will be strong at this event and certainly a man to watch !!!

Stay tuned for updates, photos & videos as we receive them from the event...

(2008-08-12) MERCY RIDER, ROTHE, SHINES AT
THE TOUR OF KANSAS CITY

Stean Rothe (Mercy Cycling Team) Rocks At The Tour Of Kansas City

The Mercy Elite Team was in action last weekend in Kansas. Elite team members, Stefan Rothe (GER); Bill Marshall (KS); Lance Hughey (AR) and Scott Barnes (AR) took part in the annual Tour Of Kansas City. This event comprises of 3 individual criteriums / circuit races over three days. Each day had substantial prize money with an additional Overall Prize list for the top 5 riders of the weekend.

Friday night started off with a super fast Criterium in downtown Kansas City. The main move of the night saw Bill Marshall take a flyer off the front mid way through the event. Shortly after being reeled in, Stefan Rothe launched himself out of the pack - this time, only a few riders could follow the power of the Germanator. Int the end, Stefan took 3rd on the night behind defending champion Brian Jensen. Ex-Mercy rider, Brad Huff (Jelly Belly Pro Cycling), rounded out the top 4.

Saturdays Cliff Drive circuit race is a tough and grueling event. Throw in some torrential rain and you have the ingredients for a "Hell of a Race". The strong men showed their true grit. Super-strong man, Brian Jensen, showed how strong he was by taking his 2nd straight win. Mercy rider, Stefan Rothe, took a fine 7th on the day, with Lance Hughey taking  20th; Bill Marshall and Scott Barnes finished just a little behind after doing stellar work earlier in the race.

On Sunday, the action moved to downtown Overland Park to a super fast and tight course and lots of turns. Stefan and the rest of the Mercy Squad were able to do enough to get Stefan another great results (10th) and put him into contention for the overall win. Scott Barnes put in a fantastic performance by coming home in 14th on the day.

Brian Jensen won again today. He also took the overall title for the Tour of Kansas City... for the 4th straight year. Congratulations Brian!!!

Stefan Rothe took 4th in the Overall Omnium results, just 1 point behind Carlos Vargas (TX Tough/Hotel San Jose). 2nd in the overall behind the overall winner Brian Jensen was ex-Mercy rider, Brad Huff (Jelly Belly Pro Cycling Team).

Well Done Mercy !!

(2008-08-06) 2008 USA CYCLING ELECTIONS
MERCY CYCLING TEAM ENDORSES DAVID LAPORTE

USA Cycling’s annual election is set to begin on Tuesday, July 15 and USA Cycling members are encouraged to vote online through their My USA Cycling account. Voting will begin on July 15 and will remain open until August 15, 2008.

Mercy Cycling encourages all of it's members who are in possession of a valid 2008 USAC License to cast their vote before August 15th. The candidate that we endorse is David LaPorte. We feel he will be the best candidate to elect to the board. He has a passion for Race Promotion and will work tirelessly to get more USAC help to Race Promoters.

David has written a special message for Mercy Cycling Team members....

I was asked to run for the USCF Board of Trustees because none of the current Board members are experienced promoters.  I've promoted many events, from local criteriums to the Nature Valley Grand Prix, and have organized a number of grassroots programs for kids and new riders.  I believe that this point of view needs to be represented on the Board.
Our sport struggles because every promoter has to reinvent the wheel on his or her own.  If we shared our knowledge (and USAC is in the best position to facilitate this), we could create much better events.  Great events are the foundation of any sport and if we didn't have to all start from scratch, we could all create those great events with a lot less work.  USAC has educational programming for officials, coaches and mechanics.  They need to provide that sort of programming for promoters, too, and that will be my mission on the Board..

(2008-07-28) SPRINGFIELD REPORT

Carl Sundquist, Mercy Cycling Team, In Action At The Queen City Criterium 2008 On Sunday at the well-attended Queen City Criterium, Mercy had three riders, Scott Barnes, Carl Sundquist, and Bill Marshall, battling it out with the likes of Pro racer Brian Jenson. In addition, the field size was around 40 deep and was well represented by a variety of teams, such as Big Shark, Dog Fish, Mesa, Tulsa Wheelmen, and Mercy.

The attacks started early and Mercy was either in the early breakaways or was helping to chase them down. With about 20 minutes to race a dangerous move got away with Brian Jenson, a Big Shark, and a Mesa rider. Mercy’s own Carl Sundquist was on the front of the peleton lap after lap trying to reel it in, but it appeared everyone else in the pack was content on racing for 4th—eventually letting the break earn a ½ lap lead.

With 2 laps to go it was, again, the powerful and energetic Carl who got back on the front and set a blistering pace with Scott Barnes sitting 2nd wheel and Bill following as well. Carl led Scott, Bill and the pack all the way into the finishing stretch for the sprint. Scott Barnes led the pack sprint and was nosed out at the line for a 5th place final position. Bill Marshall took 8th Place.

Great team effort and fantastic weekend results for Mercy.

(2008-07-28) ROTHE RACES IN CHICAGO

Stefan Rothe - Mercy Cycling TeamStefan & Chad took part in the " CHICAGO CRITERIUM" on their way back from SUPERWEEK in WI.

Here is a quick report from Stefan...

We were at Superweek the last 3 days and did the Chicago Downtown Criterium yesterday afternoon.

"After Chad's 9th place finish the night before I was finally going a bit better and made it into the 20 rider break-away which highlighted the 50 mile / 46 lap race. Chris Horner and a few other domestic pros made it happen and I was able to go from the field too. I took my turns at the front as we built up a one-minute gap to the 120+ rider strong Pro 1/2 field. With 10 laps to go, the attacks started to happen and we were busy counter-attacking, chasing and hitting our brakes too! In the end, in the final dash for the line I only managed 17th but I was satisfied, my non-sprinting legs were well exhausted by that time! "

(2008-07-27) CAGLE PERFORMS WELL AT SUPERWEEK

(2008-07-06) ROTHE TAKES 2ND IN THE POINTS COMPETITION
AT THE FITCHBURG LONGSJO CLASSIC (MA)

Last weekend, Stefan Rothe, was in action on the West coast at the Manhattan Beach GP. This week, he is in the far North East competing in the huge Fitchburg Longsjo Classic in Massachusetts !! Stefan is riding composite Stefan Rothe (Mercy Cycling Team)for the very strong Marx & Bensdorf team from Memphis TN.

News from the event indicates that Stefan is on fire yet again !!!

At Fridays Stage: he was off the front for 100KM with  Shawn Milne (Team Type 1) who was also the 2006 winner of this event. At the end of the day, both riders were eventually reeled in by the hard chasing Colavita Sutter Home Pro Cycling Team.

However, by virtue of being off the front for so long, both riders accumulated huge points in the Points Competition. Going into Saturdays stage, Stefan was 3rd in the Points Competition.

Saturdays Stage : Stefan was able to win two more sprints and place in the top 3 in a few more. As a result, Stefan has now moved up into 2nd in the Points Competition !!!

Sundays Stage : Stefan was able to gain enough points at Sundays final Criterium stage  to consolidate his 2nd place overall in the Points Competition. Great job Stefan!!! He was in good company, with Shawn Milne (Team Type 1) taking first; Eneas FREYRE (TargetTraining) a distant third. Rounding out the top positions in the points competition were Emile ABRAHAM (Team Type 1), Michael OLHEISER (Team Marx & Bendsdorf) and  Christopher JONES (Team Type 1)

Another fantastic result for a Mercy Elite Cycling Team member !!

(2008-07-04) US MASTERS NATIONALS

Congratulations to Mercy Elite Master rider, David LeDuc, on taking Silver at Masters Nationals this week. David was competing in the highly competitive Masters 55-59 age group. He had to use all his experience to counteract the constant barrage of attacks from the super strong "Amgen/Giant Masters Racing" team - which included super famous Kent Bostick (also an ex-Mercy team member). Kent Bostick eventually took Gold by just 2 seconds from David. Great job David LeDuc !!

Mercy Cycling is on a roll!

Mercy Elite Team rider, Alex Welch, riding composite for Team Team VRC: NOW-MS Society, earned himself the Most Aggressive Rider Jersey in Stage 4 at Tour of Pennsylvania, a UCI 2.2. stage race for U25 riders.

A small group of 12  riders fought out the finish today. The group included usual suspects Luyt, Van Heerden and his team-mate Dennis Niekerk along with Phil Gaimon (Fiordifrutta), Peter Salon and Calob Fairly (VMG-Felt), Alex Welch (Team VRC / MERCY) and Chad Beyer (Zteam).

Alex made his move  with 4KM to go and was only caught a mere 100 Meters from the line. He had to be satisfied with 9th place on the day. However, he was rewarded for his efforts when he was given the "Most Aggressive Rider" jersey.

Alex has also moved up to 13th on overall GC just 82 seconds behind the Yellow Jersey holder, Christo Van Heerden, from South Africa.

(2008-06-25) ANOTHER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

June 15th in Galloway, AR - Mercy team member, Scott Barnes from Bentonville, won the 2008 Arkansas State Time Trial Championship. Scott recorded a time of 55:34 for the 40KM course. His time was also the fastest time recorded by any rider in all of the State Championship categories on the day - Congratulation Scott.

This makes it FOUR State Championship jerseys that Mercy Cycling Team has won thus far in 2008 and we're sure that there will be more to come.

(2008-06-22) ROTHE GETS HIS WIN

Today the Mercy Cycling Team netted another big win - this time in Austin, TX.

Bill Marshall, Mat Stephens and new Austin resident Stefan Rothe competed in the Professional Cat 1 race at the "eRacing Stigma" Criterium. Team Rock Racing including Kayle LeoGrande, Rahsaan Bahati and Tyler Hamilton attended the race as well. The technical course combined with 100F degree heat made it a tough challenge for all riders who took part.

Stefan Keeps Good Company - Tyler Hamilton

Just 20 minutes into the race, Stefan found himself in a break with Tyler Hamilton (Rock Racing), Ian Dille (Super Squadra) and Jared Barrilleaux (Jittery Joe's Pro Cycling). The quartet rode well together and put almost one minute into the Rock-Racing-led peloton. With 5 laps to go, the attacks started to happen in the group of break away riders. This kept Stefan busy chasing down various moves by Hamilton and Barrilleaux. In the end, it came down to a sprint "man vs. man" and Stefan was in the right place at the right time coming around the final turn in first place. He held it all the way to the line to take the biggest win of the year for him ahead of Dille, Barrilleaux, and Tyler Hamilton.

(2008-06-21) CAGLE GETS HIS WIN

It had to happen. With such great form lately, it was only time before Elite Team rider, Chad Cagle, would pull off a great win for the team. Last weekend in Dallas TX, Chad won the Matrix Challenge Criterium. The race saw many break-aways go up the road but in the end it was a field sprint which Chad easily won. Riders from Jittery Joes Pro Cycling Team and Successful Living Pro Cycling attended the race, too. Team Texas Tough/THSJ had 11 (!) riders in a race but could not break the three man team of Stefan Rothe, Kolt Bates and Chad Cagle. Stefan and Kolt did their job by closing every gap that opened; bridging up to breaks and towing the field for 1 or 2 laps at a time in order to pave the way for Chad, who did what he does best: Sprinting to a nice win. Congratulations Chad !!!
